Visibility is comparative or it is nothing
A brand mention only means something relative to who else was named. If an answer recommends five tools and you are the fifth, that is a different fact than being the only name given, and both are different from being absent while two competitors get described in detail.
That is why brand-level measurement always carries a competitor set. The question is never just whether you appear; it is who wins the answer.
The signals worth separating
- Mention rate: the share of sampled answers that name the brand at all.
- Position: how early the first mention lands when the brand does appear.
- Description and sentiment: what the answer actually says about you, and whether it is right.
- Share of voice: your mentions against total mentions across the tracked brand set.
- Citations: which domains the answers draw on, and how often yours is one of them.
How to influence it
Answers are assembled from what engines learned and what they read at answer time, so influence runs through sources: the comparison pages, community threads, and references engines cite for your category. Being present and accurately described there moves answers more reliably than anything else you control.
On your own site, the levers are category-defining pages that answer buyer questions directly and comparison content for the head-to-head prompts you currently lose. Influence is the honest word; nobody controls a generated answer.
Tracking the brand view
Brand visibility tracking runs the same prompts across you and your competitors at the same time, on the same engines, repeatedly. Anything less is not a comparison; it is two anecdotes side by side.
AeoWatch's brand mentions feature does exactly that: shared prompt basis, per-engine results, mention rate with a confidence interval alongside share of voice, and every number traceable to its samples.
