AEO

AEO tools: what each category actually does

AEO tooling splits into four working categories: measurement, content shaping, technical markup, and classic SEO suites growing AI features. Most teams need measurement first, because every other purchase gets judged by what it changes in AI answers.

What counts as an AEO tool

Any software that helps a brand get named or cited by answer engines, or proves whether that is happening, gets sold under the AEO label right now. That covers products with very different jobs, so the label alone tells you almost nothing about what you are buying.

The clean way to sort the category is by job: some tools change the inputs an engine reads, and some measure the outputs it produces. A team usually needs one of each, and rarely needs four subscriptions.

The four categories

Measurement and tracking

Asks buyer questions across AI engines on a schedule and records who gets mentioned, where, with what description, and which sources are cited. This is the category that tells you whether anything else is working.

Content shaping

Helps produce pages engines can lift: answer-first outlines, question-led structure, and citable passages. Useful when the writing volume is real; risky when it turns into bulk generation of text that says what every other page says.

Technical and markup

Covers structured data, llms.txt, and crawlability for AI agents. Mostly one-time or low-frequency work, which is why it rarely justifies a standing subscription on its own.

SEO suites with AI add-ons

Classic rank trackers adding AI Overview or AI mention reporting to an existing keyword workflow. Convenient if the suite is already paid for; the AI reporting depth varies widely.

Which category comes first

Measurement, and it is not close. Without a baseline of how engines answer your buyers' questions today, every content or technical purchase is unfalsifiable: you ship changes and nobody can say whether the answers moved.

The working loop is measure, change, re-measure. Start with the category that makes the loop possible, then add shaping or technical help where the measured gaps point.

Where AeoWatch sits in the landscape

AeoWatch is a measurement tool. It supports five AI surfaces including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI results, samples each tracked question repeatedly instead of trusting one answer, and reports mention rate with a 95% confidence interval alongside comparative share of voice. Every number opens to the samples behind it.

It does not write content, publish pages, or apply technical fixes. It turns citation and competitor gaps into evidence-linked recommendations and leaves the shipping to your team, which is the honest boundary for this category.
